Spiritual Warfare and the Coronavirus

The storyline of the news lately should sound eerily familiar to every Christian. We have been told that we have a world war against an unseen enemy. For Christians, we have always known that sin has infected everyone, is a global pandemic, causes death, and needs a cure, hence our love for the risen defeater of death, Jesus Christ.

This latest war from the coronavirus, in fact, part of a much bigger war. The Bible says that the war on human life is, in fact, ultimately caused by demonic forces.

Revelation 12:7-9 says, “Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”

The past few months I’ve been preaching through the Old Testament book of Daniel. Over and over, we see that there are two realms that form one reality – the physical world we see, and the spiritual world we do not see. These worlds are connected and actions in one realm impact and implicate the other realm. Everything from governments toppling, economies falling, and people dying throughout the book are part of what is the war not against flesh and blood but rather demonic powers, principalities, and fallen spirits according to the Apostle Paul.

Therefore, as the doctors pursue a medical cure for the body, believers should also be interceding in prayer asking the God of heaven to defeat any demonic spiritual part of this war on the lives of people whom God made to live and love.

Take some time today and pray specifically for yourself and others during this crisis for God to show up in supernatural ways so that He would be made known as the good God He is.
