The percussion section did very well, and the piccolos weren’t too bad.

The point was that these people, all serious musicians, were playing secondary instruments (that they were trained at all is what makes their efforts at least recognizable).
One of those involved, Gavin Bryars, is noted for his composition “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet,” a manipulation and orchestration of a recording of a tramp singing this hymn. Its 24 minutes’ worth of repetition causes many to weep, and not for the same reasons the Portsmouth Sinfonia brings tears to the eyes.
