The guy pretty much sums up my take on the problem. We want very much to believe that Violent Islam is a perversion of the Islamic tradition and Wise and Benevolent Islam is the Real Islamic tradition. But the reality is that Islam is an invented human religion that borrows from Judaism and the Catholic Faith and mixes in Mohammed’s own delusional (or lying) claims of revelation, as well as conventional wisdom from 7th century Arab culture. It is not... Read more
I endured watching TV pundits scratching the $200 haircuts on their 88 cent heads and pondering the question of whether their might be some remote connection between Islamic belief and a guy who praises Muslim suicide bombers as heros and martyrs, uses his authority as a psychiatrist to proselytize vulnerable patiences with Islam, and dresses in traditional Muslim garb in preparation for bursting into a room full of defenseless people and shouting “Allahu ackbar!” as he guns them down. It... Read more
I wonder if your readers can help me. I am presenting a reflection on the Eucharist at a parish retreat. As part of this I need to find a song that goes along with the theme. It won’t be performed, just played on a stereo while everyone meditates for a few minutes after I finish. Before any traditionalists freak out, this will be in a classroom setting, not part of Mass. Contemporary music is okay. Do your or your readers... Read more
An atheist who is wholly unfamiliar with the letters to the Romans and Galatians and Hebrews, as well as Acts 15 and the entire New Testament discussion of the relationship between the Old and New Covenants tries to play a game of gotcha with the grownups: See, this is the problem with the New Atheists: they are so full of contempt for Christ that they have never bothered to find out what it is they are arguing against. So how does Italian Education Minister Mariastella Gelmini defend the crucifix from the “make a desert and call it peace” machinations of the EU?: ‘No one, and certainly not an ideological European court, will succeed in erasing our identity,’ th Education Minister said. ‘The presence of the crucifix in classrooms is not a sign of belief in Catholicism, rather it is a symbol of our tradition.’ Ah! Well then! As long as it’s just a sort of meaningless fetish with... Read more
Virtue Quest is a blog following the day-to-day journey of growing in virtue and overcoming vice. In short, the goal is to become more and more human every day. Then again, Virtue Quest could be some sort of cool video game where you blow away the seven deadly sins with the light saber of the Spirit. Just a thought. Well, maybe “thought” is a strong word…. Today, my oppressed masses, I wish to stoop down from my Dark Tower and bring a little excitement into your humdrum lives which ever seek meaning and purpose in blind conformity to my every whim. Therefore, it is my capricious whim that you all bake yourselves cookies in 90 seconds using a waffle iron. That is all! Read more
I am a long-time reader, and a seminarian studying for the diocesan priesthood. I am writing because I have a very close friend whose sister attempted suicide via drug overdose this morning, and she is in need of prayers. Her family has just found out about her habitual drug use, and she has been living an actively homosexual lifestyle. She is loved very much by her family, and they are very frightened and hurt by what is going on. Would... Read more
