It might seem strange to say, but I’m thankful for my government. I’m not necessarily talking about the politicians in Congress whose commitment to ideology over reality is driving our country into the ground. They actually make up a very small portion of our government. I’m talking about the engineers, scientists, soldiers, policy wonks, diplomats, economists, project managers, social workers, secretaries, computer techies, accountants, janitors, cafeteria workers, receptionists, city planners, librarians, teachers, park rangers, police officers, and fire fighters who... Read more

I recently had a very important conversation with a good friend who had the courage to share with me that some things I had written online were hurtful to people I care about. It was hard to hear, but very helpful at the same time. I’ve been trying to wrestle with what to do about it. At first I wanted to protest that other pastors are doing the exact same thing I am, but then I looked around on the... Read more

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal... Read more

Sermon preached at LifeSign on 11/19/2011 Text: John 1:43-51 Whenever I read Nathanael’s question, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” I think about my hometown. Some of y’all know that I come from Durham, North Carolina. Durham is typically considered to be the ugly stepsister of the two other cities in the Triangle – Chapel Hill, the trendy college town where you can’t get a cup of coffee for less than $5, and Raleigh, the state capitol and home... Read more

I’ve been watching the news reports of the Occupy protests this past week wondering how much to criticize and how much to sympathize. In general, I sympathize with the feeling that our society is broken and we don’t know what to do but we want to do something. I’m not sure what blocking traffic accomplishes. If I wanted to be snotty, I could say that I’m part of the 90% who wants to get to work. Ten years ago, I... Read more

This week in his school library, my son Matthew happened to check out a book called The Grasshopper’s Song by Nikki Giovanni, a famous poet who teaches at Virginia Tech. At first, when I saw the book was 50 pages long, I told him we needed to read another one but then I started flipping through it and I got interested. It’s a subversive retelling of the famous Aesop’s fable about the grasshopper and the ants. (more…) Read more

I’ve been reading about a chapter a week of Thomas Merton’s No Man is an Island for the past couple of months. The 11th chapter on mercy has some really good material that’s worth quoting and contemplating, so I thought I would share. God has left sin in the world in order that there may be forgiveness: not only the secret forgiveness by which He Himself cleanses our souls, but the manifest forgiveness by which we have mercy on one... Read more

October and November are anxious months for pastors, because they’re generally when we run our annual stewardship campaign in which we find all sorts of indirect ways to tell our parishioners why they should give their church money. Is it because the Bible says so (ten percent, a-hem!!)? Is it because the church will shut down tomorrow if you don’t pull out your checkbooks? Or do we try the more subtle approach of saying stewardship isn’t just about money; it’s... Read more
