Off to the Fraters but first some random political thoughts

Off to the Fraters but first some random political thoughts January 20, 2008

My old friend Walt Wieder (UU minister and increasingly these days a “radio personality.” Follow that link to listen to a kind and rational progressive radio show…) flew in from Arizona last eve and later today he & I drive off to Sudbury for the one hundred and sixth gathering of the Fraters of the Wayside Inn. Yesterday I googled the Fraters and was disappointed to see the closest thing to a “full” description of this venerable organization was something I threw together last year (link provided above). They deserve better.

At least as of last year the Wayside Inn did not provide web access for guests so my contributions to the blog might be a bit spotty for the next few days. I do try to slip away to a local Starbucks for a latte once or twice during my stay & while there, should I get there, I’ll do my best to catch all ten of my readers up on the shenanigans of that rough and tumble gang of fraters (which I rush to note includes sorors even though they’re called fraters. Ah, the archaic!).

In the meantime for those who follow American politics as spectator sport, wow! I guess Mr Huckabee is now officially on the slide. Of course, who knows for sure. Still, I’ve never ever seen the Republicans in such disarray. Not that that feels bad…

On the other hand while Senator Clinton remains my girl, I am distressed at what appears to be the plan to subtly or maybe its not so subtly shift Senator Obama to be the “black candidate.” On the one hand I suspect this would be the Republican plan down the line. On the other it is seriously unseemly for Democratic operatives to take it on. And I worry about the possibility that should Ms Clinton prevail that African American voters might end up sitting on their hands come the general.

I should note how I am famous for bad political prognostication and the very fact that these thoughts have popped into my head suggest they are wrong…
