I was mildly surprised at how flat Governor Romney’s speech was. Perhaps he is getting tired of his far right sheep’s clothing. I would think it should be beginning to itch…
But then there was quite a save. I was reminded again of how smart Mayor Giuliani is. Witty, sharp, very, very New York. He provided a perfect set up for Alaska’s governor. I suspect much better than the announced video, which was lost due to time run over.
And I was more than a little impressed at how well Governor Palin could read a speech.
Clearly it was written by the best writers in the Republican stable. Short on facts (mostly, in fact, quarter and half truths, and including that one continuing outright lie, as best I understand, asserting once again how she was opposed to the so-called bridge to nowhere, when she in fact was happy as a clam to accept federal largess until it was killed by congress…), and memorably, long on zingers.
What it tells us about the governor is that she can stand in a large crowd and not get flustered. None of the deer in headlights stuff we got from Dan Quail who had much more experience in big venues. First rate delivery…
And we saw in one of those lines, her job: pit bull with lipstick.
In the great flurry running up to this event with its web based rumors and various distractions were clear warnings from people who follow Alaska’s fortunes: do not underestimate this woman.
Of course we need that off the cuff response to a hardball question to see what she actually knows.
And, the real questions, the ones that must be looked into deeply, are just how far right is she really? We know with certainty that she opposes abortion in all situations. She also has a history of problematic associations with far right political movements. While not a member, although her husband was for two years, she has been closely associated with the Alaskan Independence Party which seeks, among other things, to secede from the United States. And most troubling, to my mind, is her past support of Pat Buchanan and his nativist and thinly veiled anti-semitic campaigns…
Those allegations of her apparent attempts to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper and her actual firing of the public safety commissioner for not doing so, if true, bode ill for a break from the Bush/Cheney years of abusive government…
And it is absolutely time to give the governor’s religious views the same scrutiny as has been given Senator Obama’s. Another creationist in the White House is, I really believe, a very bad thing for our country…
And we need to recall, this is what Senator McCain chose to be a heartbeat away…
