On a more important note, I see around the UU blogosphere a desire for our denominational president to speak out on the current crisis in Iran.
I agree.
Iran is a terribly important regional power. What it does has repercussions around the area. And should they ever get the bomb, well, much further afield, as well…
I think the cautious position taken by our American president generally a wise one. I think if he’s seen to be pushing too hard for the opposition all it can do is fan nationalistic flames.
But our liberal faith tradition which has a history of making statements against tyrannies, should speak out against the almost certain theft of this election, and absolutely the censorship and violent suppression of dissent in that ancient nation which deserves so much better.
Let’s be clear, it has been obvious since his legitimate election the first time around (more or less, there is always that problem of who gets to stand for office there) Mr Ahmadinejad has shown himself an antisemite, a misogynist. And now he is revealed as a general all around thug. He has shown himself to have no scruples regarding his own elected status, willing to steal what he appears to not be able to win honestly.
People of faith need to state this fact and broadcast it to the world.
If for no other reason, to provide some comfort to those who are suffering under the heel of this tyrant and who are trying hard to stand for something good in that part of the world…
