Martin Luther King, Jr was born on this day in 1929. He would have been eighty-one today.

One of the most significant figures in our American history. Admired around the world. An exemplar for our young, as well as the rest of us.

And at Youtube a recording of his I Have a Dream speech had to disable the comments section because of the number of hateful and racist comments.

No doubt we’ve come a long way.

No doubt we have not arrived at that promised land yet. But Martin saw through the mists of history and pointed the way for us…

For the past number of years the First Unitarian Church in Providence honored this day with a member of the congregation speaking on the themes of race and justice on the closest Sunday. Me, I feel the wounds of racism too deeply and I have too much to say to surrender the pulpit like that. So, this year I’m sharing the pulpit with Claudia Ford, a member of the church who has thought long and deep on the issues of race in our culture, and we have covenanted together to do our best to speak the deep hopes, while also acknowledging the deep problems, facing those of us who dream of that day where we are judged by the content of our character rather than the color of our skin…

And the good news, the really good news, is that there are still those willing to take up the struggle…
