A Letter From Senator Jack Reed on Marriage Equality

A Letter From Senator Jack Reed on Marriage Equality 2012-05-09T19:13:58-07:00

Apparently following a tweet the senator sent me, and I suspect a number of other constituents, a response to a request for his support of marriage equality.

Dear Reverend Ford:

Thank you for contacting me regarding same-sex marriage.

I have been reviewing and thinking about this issue for some time out of respect for Rhode Islanders with varying viewpoints on this issue. It is a matter that deserves and demands serious and thorough consideration, not a quick reaction, because it involves matters of a deep emotional nature.

These careful deliberations, the compelling Constitutional analysis of the 9th Circuit case, and my belief that Rhode Islanders stand for tolerance helped lead me to support same-sex marriage. Indeed, I believe repeal of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and support for same-sex marriage are in keeping with my strong record of support for the LGBT community, and I suspect it is the direction in which most Americans and the courts are headed.

I want to be clear that I do not seek to cast aspersions on those who believe otherwise. I believe there is a greater need for civility on all sides when it comes to this issue.

Our country has changed a great deal since DOMA was enacted, and I do not believe that such a law reflects today’s reality. As such, I will cosponsor the repeal of DOMA.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments on this important issue, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Jack Reed
United States Senator

Thank you, Senator!
