Dolly turns 70? Doesn’t seem possible. Of course a little surgery here and there hasn’t hurt in that “I can’t believe it” department. But, the delightful personality that has captured so many over the years, that’s all hers. Always has been. Me, I like the little factoids that speak to the person beyond the persona. Like the fact she’s been able to remain married to the same guy for, what, fifty years, now? Or, that she raised five of her siblings? Or, how she has stood with the GLBT community, even when it wasn’t a popular thing to do, and considering her music base in country possibly even harmful to her career. Or, her many ways of “giving back” for her success, like that lovely project, the Imagination Library that she started in 1995, which sends a book a month to children in Eastern Tennessee from birth to kindergarten. And has to date given away something in the neighborhood of fifty million books.
So, what clip to choose to honor her?
Maybe something rooted in where it is that she came? Raised in poverty, she was the first person in her family to graduate from High School.
Or, that simple celebration of standing up to what needs standing up to?
Or, perhaps just this…
