Yesterday I barely dodged death.
Well, sorta…
I put the almost final touches on Sunday’s sermon. Then I was able to have lunch with Jan. After which I took off for Providence. After swinging by Peets to pick up a pound of coffee I drove up route 9 to the 128 intersection, pulled onto the on ramp – and then spent the next twenty minutes getting onto 128 (Interstate 95 to people who only read maps…).
Once onto the interstate I saw a horrific accident. As I drove by an oversized flatbed car carrier had been slid under a semi, which was being raised up. As I drove slowly, slowly by I saw the badly damaged car that had been under the semi…
Actually, around Pawtucket, as WBUR was fading away I caught a snippet which said in fact there were two cars under the semi…
Okay, okay, I wasn’t almost killed. But I know few people who don’t have that thought as they drive by such an accident. Wow. Five minutes, or ten, or twenty; and that coulda been me!
Ah, mortality…
At First U I had a quick meeting with the DRE, then launched into “office hours,” meeting with whomever wished a brief private encounter for the next two hours. Then I met for a check in with the Search Committee. After which a nice dinner meeting with the past-Presidents and members of the Nominating Committee. And then a meeting with Stewardship, Building an Grounds, Finance and Investments…
A goodly drive home, where actually, surprisingly, I arrived before Jan who had been to a Zen board meeting (Yes, even Zen groups need boards…)…
Today is major gearshift time. I put the finishing touches on the sermon and run it out. Prep my talk for tonight. Do some ironing. Pack.
Then I swing by Perkins School, pick up Jan, and off we go for the weekend and home stretch…
