So, this happened on my wall the other day.  I have mostly been posting on Facebook instead of using my blog because I have been suffering worse than usual from brain fog and stress, and it’s easier for me to slap a few sentences together rather than having to come up with actual coherent paragraphs, but some days I just have a topic in me and it pops out.  Here it is, as it was when I posted it as... Read more

Howdy!  Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve posted.  Quite a while.  Shame on me.  Shame on my brain, more like.  In times of stress it shuts down all non-essential services and leaves me with the ability to make pancakes, tie shoes, write in short paragraphs, and ignore the fact that I forgot to put money in the kids’ school lunch accounts.  Damn brain. I’m still emerging from the brain fog, but man, there has been SO much going on. ... Read more

Here’s my issue with the “Muslim Beauty Pageant” that Miss Nairobi won.  I love my Muslim sisters and I am very proud of those who are strong in their Islam and who can recite Qur’an. But let’s be real. You can recite Qur’an all day long, but if you are not LIVING by what the Qur’an teaches then your words are just meaningless drivel no matter how beautiful the voice with which you recite.  Beauty contests are exercises in tabarruj,... Read more

I made a conscious decision not to write anything on my blog or on Facebook on the anniversary of 9/11. I knew that the day would be fraught with emotion, and anything I would write would either offend or be so vapid as to be meaningless. I wrote one quick status update and that’s it. I also knew I’d be in a bad mood anyway because I had to get on the phone with ebay and let me tell you,... Read more

Transgender Muslims?  This has been a thing on my Facebook feed recently.  I even received a private message asking me about it.  Well, I’m not a scholar and I’m not a doctor and I’m not a psychologist, so you are going to get my complete off-the-cuff uneducated layperson’s point of view: DNA.  It makes us what we are.  I went to school with a girl who had very masculine attributes.  Turns out she had a genetic mutation that gave her... Read more

This might tick some people off but let me put it out there:  I am emphatically NOT in favor of a “Million Muslim March” on the anniversary of 9/11.  There, I said it. The founders of the march say that they want to reclaim 9/11, but I say simply, you cannot.  You cannot “reclaim” 9/11.  It is seared into the consciousness of every American and many people around the world.  It is a day when the world stopped.  I remember... Read more

Most everyone knows about the events in Egypt now. Much of the violence has unfolded in full view of video cameras. I have seen bodies piled in the mosques, I have seen a woman in niqab shot to death by a sniper, I have seen grown men weeping over the bodies of their fallen sons. It is a tragedy on every level and it seems to be something that will not be resolved soon. A friend of mine asked... Read more

Alhamdulillah, I had a really nice Eid with my family on Thursday.  I had bought my daughter her first abaya and she looked so cute, mashaAllah, with her long robe and pink hijaab.  My abaya was nice and looked good even with a pink hijaab.  I had not intended to wear a pink hijaab, but my washing machine broke on Wednesday evening as I was just starting the laundry marathon.  I had to scramble around to make sure the boys... Read more

Today is Sunday, the fourteenth of July.  I’ve been fasting since Tuesday.  I’m starting to get into the swing of things, though getting up at o-dark-thirty to eat when I’m barely conscious is something I’ll never be good at.  To the point; my breakfast this morning was two slices of leftover cold pizza and an ice cream sandwich.  Took my vitamins, glugged my water, prayed, went back to bed. I’m trying to pace myself.  I have been reading Qur’an and... Read more

Well, as usual, my Facebook page has served as a springboard for another blog post.  Here’s what’s up.  I had seen some postings by friends who are going through divorces, usually as a result of domestic violence suffered at the hands of their husbands.  Many Muslim women, especially reverts, have the incorrect understanding that according to Islam, they are supposed to just put up with the violence, be patient, and expect their reward in Jannah.  I rather forcefully disagreed, as... Read more
