My friend Kitti South has come back to the U.S, but Melissa Diamond and the rest of the team are still in Jenin, in the West Bank of the Palestinian territory for the next few months working on “The Jenin Autism Project,” part of “A Global Voice for Autism.” They are there to help parents learn about autism and Applied Behavior Analysis and help connect them to other autism resources as well as building their own supportive network. So many things are different now. So many. And though I know that parenting is a journey, and we learn from our early selves and fine-tune our methods as the years progress, that we make many mistakes, and that sometimes mistakes need to be made for us to learn and grow – but that doesn’t lessen the guilt or heartache that I wish I had known then what I know better now. That as important as it is to teach... Read more

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” — from Winnie-the-Pooh, by A.A. Milne For me, the quote would go like this: “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred plus one more day, so you’ll never have to live without me.” This sentiment has been expressed in so many essays, in so many conversations,... Read more

We trotted out an old classic this past weekend in our home – The Message, directed by Moustapha Akkad in 1977, and gathered mine and my sister-in-law’s children for a viewing. Being that it’s the month of Rabi’Awwal, which is considered to be the birth-month of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), my sister-in-law thought it would be a good way to reintroduce our kids to his message and his struggles in bringing Islam to the world. I remembered watching this film as... Read more

Sometimes the memories resurface with such veracity so as to take my breath away with the pain and utter helplessness I have tried to bury. Maybe we are not meant to forget our worst times. Maybe they are to be reminders so that we appreciate everything better that comes before and after, even when that better doesn’t seem good enough. I am sitting on our sofa in our family room settling in to watch some TV. The kids have gone... Read more

Over the years, we’ve been blessed to have a number of great therapists come into our home and work with Lil D. And we’ve been especially lucky the past 3-4 years to have a group of therapists, who are either related or friends with each other, come to our home — when one gets ready to leave, he/she recommends another from their circle of friends/family to work with Lil D. They pour their hard work and love into Lil D,... Read more
