June is a very special month for me… My birth month… Juneteenth. The month slavery was abolished. My divorce… June is a time filled with emotions and self-reflection. I celebrate the new year of life that Allah has blessed me with. I celebrate an end of my tumultuous marriage. I celebrate when my people were freed from the physical chains of slavery. Most importantly though, I celebrate the strong Black Muslim woman that I have become. Don’t be mistaken though.... Read more

Money… It’s important to most women. A majority of us need to feel like we are going to be financially secure within a relationship. The idea of venturing into a marriage with a brotha who is not financially stable is scary for the most part. Now, I have realized a couple things. Sistas, take notes because this might change how you view brothas who you deem “broke”. Let me break it down for you. I put “broke brothas” into three... Read more

He saw me from across the room. I pretended like I was distracted so he wouldn’t approach me. In my peripheral I could see him making his way through the crowd. I turned around trying to use one last-ditch effort. Perhaps he would not think its me is what I thought to myself… Then I remembered I was the only one wearing a hijab. A bright fuchsia one at that. I laughed under my breath. My efforts didn’t work because... Read more

He told me he believed in soul mates. I looked at him over my glasses with skepticism. “Soul mates…” I whispered to myself inquisitively. Not me… This is something that I have thought of over and over again. It’s a frequent topic among my SistaQueens. The idea that you are made for someone and someone is made specifically for you. Some people are on a search their entire lives for this. Absolute rubbish. I like to consider myself a romantic. To be... Read more

I’m an old school hip hop head. I was jamming out to some old Salt-N-Pepa and this song got me thinking. I did promise that this blog would consist of pointers geared towards the brothas. Well, today is all for you! I know it is hard. You are really trying to figure this all out. Muslim women come off as intimidating. At the end of the day we are still women and desire the same things as non-Muslim women. I... Read more

A couple weeks ago a good friend introduced me to a brotha who was looking for a wife. She said we seemed pretty compatible and that he was very interested in meeting me after seeing a couple of my photos. He seemed like a decent guy. My friend said that her husband knew him for a while and that he was reputable. So, we scheduled a sit down and went from there. We briefly spoke on the phone. He seemed... Read more

I think I was around seven years old at the time. My family had relocated to Switzerland and I was attending grammar school. Switzerland was small and cramped. The streets were brick and narrow. Every corner had a bakery and the air always smelled like pine. Despite the fact that the country still had neo-nazi tendencies I felt safe for the most part, as safe as a seven year old could feel I guess. I was attending school and I... Read more

Since I’ve been looking for a husband I’ve met plenty of suitors. Many of them have been married to non-Muslim women at one point or another. I have been trying to come up with a practical reason as to why this is taking place within our communities. Some seem legitimate while others are just nerve racking. Typically if I am speaking to a brother I will inquire as to why he chose a non-Muslim woman over a Muslim. I usually... Read more
