All the windows are open and I have a fan blowing through the kitchen to move the hot air from the ovens outside. This is a scene right from my earliest childhood memories, with one exception. This plate is going to our neighbors! Read more

Ohmygosh, Ramadan is kicking my A**!  I’ve not been this tired for more than 2 days consecutively since 2005.  Usually when I get this little sleep, there is a squishy, sweet-smelling baby in my arms.  No such luck.  I do have a very appreciative husband and son though, so I try really hard to be gracious.  They have the more challenging task.  Husband is actually getting the same or less sleep than I am and fasting, and going out of... Read more

This Eid, we’re trying something different. Each year I try to make the Islamic Holidays in our home more ‘holiday.’ this year, I’m focusing on Eid decorations. People have shared their pictures with me, have made suggestions, and they never really fit well with me. They always seemed like birthday party decorations mixed with Christmas decorations in a piecemeal sort of way. Kate brought home a segmented snake from art class a few weeks ago, and from there…the Eid banner... Read more

The ladies an I are busy at work today, constructing our very own Eid banner. The doorbell just sounded, and it was two of our neighbors! Ramadan Mubarak! (or Ramadan Kareem if you prefer) Read more

Usually, during Ramadan we send gifts of food back and forth to the neighbors. Its our thing. Part of how we celebrate the holiday.  When J.J. lived down the street from us last year, we took various food items to her as well. This year, we sent over a quart of homemade ice cream. Last summer, we took a road trip to Columbus, Ohio. What does that have to do with ice cream? Well, when we go on vacation i... Read more

I’ve just been posting a few things over on my Facebook Fan Page, and it occurred to me that I am much more active there than I am here.  When I prepare to post something here, it is usually a story I want to tell you, or a tip I’ve learned, or something I’ve struggled with.  Most of the time, I live a quiet, run of the mill life.  There isn’t really anything exciting – Islam related content – every... Read more

Each and every time we leave the comfort and security of our little city, we search out the Islamic community of different parts of the country.  I look up the names and addresses of the mosques closest to where we will be staying, and search out restaurants and shops that are owned by Muslims.  We do this so that our children get a sense of belonging wherever they are, and that Islam isn’t just isolated to our city and countries... Read more

Hello, my friends.  How’s your Ramadan going?  Mine is very different this year.  My son, Mr. Fox, has entered the age of mandatory fasting this year, and is no longer practicing.  This means that it is not optional for him to get up and have Suhoor (the morning meal prior to fasting.) I am struggling with this on so many levels.  First, because I do not fast, I feel guilty that my baby is going almost 17 hours without food... Read more

So, a few years ago, I read the book Curly Girl by Lorraine Massey.  Like any girl with stick straight hair, I wanted mine curly.  When my daughters were born, I hoped and prayed that they would get to have curly hair like my husband.  Much to my surprise, they got most of his color and my texture.  As they grew, I noticed there was a marked difference in the texture of their hair.  Pea has more corse texture, Kate... Read more
