On Medjugorje – What American Catholic Media can Learn from the National Geographic Article 2016-01-07T12:17:37-05:00

By Stephen Ryan

To the surprise of many, the December issue of National Geographic Magazine has put the Mother of Jesus Christ on its cover. The subtitle of the article is “Mary – the world’s most powerful woman.” The article has been quite a sensation to many who love the Blessed Mother.

The article also, without hesitation, happily describes the incredible events taking place in Medjugorje. The National Geographic article contains  no caveats or warnings about Medjugorje – no talk of forbidden activities – the author simply “reports” what is happening at Medjugorje without prejudice.

I have closely followed the events at Medjugorje for many years and I  always find myself  scratching my head upon reading news articles written by American Catholic press.  Close encounters with Medjugorje written by Catholic journalists are filled with dire warnings and sound bells of alarm- it’s like they are handling  rattlesnakes.  I think Catholic journalists could learn a thing or two on reporting significant religious events of a mystical nature by reading the National Geographic article. They could learn something like:  just report the news.
