Matthew was the Vicar (seminary intern) for 14 months at House for All Sinners and Saints and this past Thursday I was honored to preach at his ordination.  He is planting a church now in Rochester, NY.  You can “like” a page on Facebook called South Wedge Mission to learn more.  Literally today is his first day on the job. 🙂   Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say... Read more

NBW sermon 9-9-12 <——-click here to listen along.  Sermons are a spoken act.   31Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he... Read more

NBW Sermon 8-26-2012 <CLICK HERE to listen along.  Sermons are a spoken event!! In the last couple weeks, many of us here have been lucky enough to see a musical called The Book of Mormon.  It’s an irreverent and profoundly funny look at the culture of religion in general and the origins of a distinctly American religion in particular.  I personally thought it was hilarious and found myself snickering at what feels like some of the crazier ideas of Mormonism –... Read more

Jesus said to them, 7Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life.   When I was in my twenties and totally out of control and pretty much estranged from my conservative Christian parents I used to joke about how my mom would try and guilt me into connecting with them more often by saying in her Kentucky accent “Nadia, the least you could do is come visit us more often…since we won’t... Read more

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look* into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus... Read more

NB-W Sermon 7_16_2012 <—-Click here to listen along.  Sermons are are spoken art form. When Harper was born we decorated the nursery in a Noah’s Ark theme…images of Noah and of animals entering a large wooden boat 2×2.  It’s a common enough decorating scheme for kid’s rooms.  I mention it because this week at Bible study we discussed how weird it is that the beheading of John the Baptists isn’t a common decorating scheme for kid’s rooms. Because this is... Read more

House for All Sinners and Saints, the congregation I serve as Pastor, is a pretty progressive bunch of folks.  The culture of the congregation skews liberal – so when a thing like the SCOTUS ruling that the Affordable Care Act was indeed constitutional happens, my Facebook newsfeed lights up with one celebration after the other.  Based only on my Facebook newsfeed last Thursday one could easily surmise that all of America was elated about the decision. Except that’s not reality.... Read more

Urban biking is not without peril.  Many of my parishioners rely exclusively on human-powered transportation and do so while competing for road space with motorized vehicles.  As a way of acknowledging the inherent goodness of God’s gifts of life and health and the humble but elegant bicycle we decided to conduct a Blessing of the Bicycles for the entire Denver cycling community (this is the 4th annual!). This event was open to all regardless of religious affiliation, race, creed, color,... Read more

NBW sermon 6_24_2012 <——- Click here to listen along. Preaching is a spoken art form! This might come as a shock to all of you, but I have not always gotten everything I’ve wanted.  And I’m sure unlike all of you…sometimes I blame God for that.  As a matter of fact, there are things in life that I prayed like hell to either get or to keep – because I knew if I could have them I would be happy... Read more

This past Sunday I recorded the last verse of  our closing hymn: How Great Thou Art.  Please take a second to listen: How great thou art-1. HFASS <—–click here One of my non-negotiables going in to starting a church was that congregational singing be the primary musical expression of the gathered people of God. Not a band. Not an organ. Not a singer-songer writer strumming guitar chords. But the congregation itself.  Singing together means breathing together.  It means creating harmonies that... Read more
