Didn’t Martin Luther say that confusion is the highest wisdom? Didn’t Anne Lamott say that the opposite of faith isn’t doubt but certainty? Didn’t St. John of the Cross insist that the dark night of the soul was the richest spiritual condition? Didn’t Thomas Merton suggest that doubt is a necessarily corollary to faith, the rafters upon which faith is built? Didn’t I just read somewhere that saying “I don’t know” can be the greatest articulation of wisdom? Have you read “The Cloud of Unknowing”? Don’t you think that there is a deeper kind of knowing than intellectual confidence?
