cartoon: the bowels of the church

cartoon: the bowels of the church September 16, 2010

Cartoons exaggerate to make a point. I’m not cynical enough to believe this applies to everyone or every church. But it does apply to many. It may apply as a gentle warning to all those for whom it doesn’t apply now or yet.

Many people are taken into the church… ingested… and completely used up. Digested. All the goodness, all the nutrients, all the life, is sucked right out of them. It is absorbed into the body and the rest, the waste, is rejected. When they don’t have anything left, they are treated like s*@t and evacuated. Or they finally find the nerve to leave and still experience the same rejection.

Did you know that “humility” in the Old Testament refers to the poor, the people of the earth, the lowliest? Humility wasn’t a sweet virtue people cultivated like today. People were automatically humble because they were the poorest who lived off the land.

The latin “humus” refers to the natural organic compounds that enrich the soil through the biological decomposition of plant and animal particles.

These two, humility and humus, are related. So, if you feel like crap, you’ve been treated like s#*t, remember that you now have all the ingredients for humility. All these things: s#*t, crap, manure, humus, humility, are what may actually enrich you and the earth around you.

It is my observation that the most influential people for good in the world are the most humble. All the terrible things that have happened to them which many call “waste” have been folded into their lives like compost to enrich them and those around them.
