How Am I a Pastor?

How Am I a Pastor?

I often find myself surrounded by very accomplished professionals. I meet surgeons, professors, political scientists, nurse instructors, doctors, nurses, teachers of English, counselors, business people, entrepreneurs, and more. It is very interesting and stimulating to talk with people who are experts in their fields.

Even though I can try my hand at many things and succeed to some degree, I am not an expert in those different fields. Even the field I am in right now… teaching English as a second language… I am not an expert. Yet. I can do it. I am certified. I am gaining experience. Even though it is a job I am grateful for, I am not an expert.

I realized the other day that there is one field I am an expert in, and that is being a pastor. I was trained theologically and practically for many years, acquiring a B.A. majoring in Biblical Studies and Theology; an M.A. in Theological Studies; and another Masters in Religion. I also acquired a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education. As well as other additional professional developments all in the areas of theology and ministry. On top of that add over 25 years of professional pastoral experience in the church. This is my area of expertise. I realized that, or admitted that, just this last weekend. I felt personally challenged to not throw all that away, but to embrace it on a deeper level.

Someone asked me today if I’ve considered starting another church. No. But I do sense a pastor’s call upon my life. This is who I am and what I do best. I want to teach. I want to pastor people. Even though I realize I do this to some degree on this blog, I want it to be my life… along with my art, cartooning and writing… which all compliment and are manifestations of my pastoral passion. I’m not sure how to do this. New territory.

Maybe you can help me articulate what I’m trying to say. What do you think?
