A subject truly dedicated to his Cause regulates his eternal fidelity by means of incessant betrayals. (Slavoj Žižek)
Well, it’s been a year since I left the ministry and left the church. I still feel like I am a member of the church. I now can honestly say that I feel the whole world is my family, no matter what religion or non-religion. But I still belong to the church, as in it is my family of origin. I love it and am interested in it. I believe in it and care for it.
I also admit I am a critic of the church and religion. Some think that love for the church and being a critic of it are mutually exclusive. I don’t agree. I think that the more someone cares about something, the more incisive their critique of it will be. Otherwise why say anything? Why care? I do care. Therefore I draw and write and speak… I believe for its sake.
I wish more people would be more critical of the church. Too many people are uncritical…. for many reasons: fear of authority; the need to belong; their brain is on snooze; they do not question historical institutions; they are still on their religious honeymoon; they are on the payroll.
Or… maybe they’ve found the perfect church. But I always question that.
All forms of church are organized and institutional, and the gravitational pull of all organizations and institutions is towards the dehumanization of its members.
