The brain’s primary impulse is the protection of the organism. It will rapidly cozy into any theological box that provides this sense of security. Almost nobody really changes his or her mind.

Often our changes are simply minor adjustments, small rearrangements of the furniture within the same box we’ve always been in. Even our spiritual conversions may be a theological applique adorning a more fundamental disposition.

We must always ask ourselves, “Do I believe this only because it is convenient?”
