I wrote this as a tweet, google+ and facebook update yesterday:
What we want to think is true is the root of our belief. Our belief creates whole worlds. These worlds confirm our belief. Endless cycle.
I used to believe, as a child, that nothing could hurt my dad. Because, as a child, I needed that to be true. The fact that, as a child, I never saw my dad hurt confirmed my belief. In fact, the fact that, as a child, I never saw him hurt strengthened my belief in his invincibility. As the years went on, my need for his invincibility to be real only deepened.
It was only when I finally matured, rather late I might add, that I slowly began to realize that he wasn’t invincible. A whole world I had created from my need and my belief eroded in order for a more realistic knowledge to take its place.
