whoa!! this is great! i’d like to know what the dad replied!
My last church was one of the founders of the Welcoming & Affirming movement. One day when my son (who lived with his dad & was spending part of his summer vacation with me) was about 9 or 10, he came to me all upset. “Mom, why did you have to name me Gary? Everybody at school calls me ‘Gay’!”
I said, “Those kids don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re just being mean and ignorant. You know what ‘gay’ is, right?”
“OK, if you think you might be gay, come talk to me about it first. I know a lot of gay people at church who know what it’s like to be hassled and can help you deal with it. And remember, I love you no matter what.”
“OK, thanks. I love you too, mom.” And that was that.
I won’t say I didn’t breathe a huge sigh of relief when he turned out straight (and happily married) after all – life is rough enough for young people without having all kinds of bigoted crap shoveled on them…
