The religious use of biblical language about masters and servants and slaves and redemption and bought with a price and bondservant and lord and service and unquestioning obedience, etcetera, all come from an age when slavery was an assumed, acceptable and even enviable way of life.

I’ve been encouraged and even pressured to kiss ass a lot. I used to because I thought it was necessary. To belong. To succeed. To stay. I’ve always noticed that with it you usually get a promise in return. Just words. But I’ve refused for a long time now and I’m doing quite well thank you very much.
