FREEBIE FRIDAY: musician Rachel Chesney

Welcome to a different kind of FREEBIE FRIDAY. Today I’m not giving away any of my art. Instead, I’m introducing you to another artist, my friend Rachel Chesney.

I meet very interesting people through my blog. I mostly meet people who have serious questions and want to ask them. They have discovered that the faith isn’t all they’ve been fed. They’ve seen behind the curtain and it has spoiled everything. They need a new understanding and a new way to articulate this understanding. They’re looking for a way to walk their own path with courage, integrity, and a clear conscience and intellect. Somehow the conversations that take place on nakedpastor provide a means to do that.

(I have a confession) When I’m listening to my iTunes and a worship song comes on I fast-forward it. You might jump to the conclusion that it’s a bitter reaction to all that happened to me in the church. I’ve seriously meditated on this and I can honestly say I don’t think so. Almost all the worship music I have certainly does represent for me the superficiality, hypocrisy and naiveté of a spirituality I have rejected. I’m not talking about, say, Arvo Pärt or the collection of Russian Orthodox choirs or Renaissance Church music I have. I’ll listen to that because of its depth, seriousness and wisdom. No, I’m talking about most modern worship music. I fast-forward it. I’ve even started deleting some. (Confession over.)

But there’s some musical art that catches my ear, mind and heart. Like Rachel’s. I met her through my blog  a while ago. She was seriously involved in a church and worship leading. But she’s experienced quite a few traumatic changes in her life recently and the struggle is evident in her voice and music. She sent me a track a while ago and I was impressed with its authenticity and honesty. It is very raw, acoustic and genuine, with no voice-correction or electronic tricks. It reminds me of some of the Psalms or Lamentations… there is a current of sorrow, but blended with an implicit strength. I don’t fast-forward it. Many of you will love it.
