I always was curious. I always had questions. I always was “disruptive” by asking too much. I never just “went along”.  I never would settle for the easy answer. I always wanted to see the roots. Even in my adult life my questions got me into trouble. But I just keep asking. I guess I’ll never get straightened out. Own the original drawing. Buy a print of this cartoon. The cartoon I posted this morning, “Exit Interview”, provoked quite a bit of discussion here and on Facebook. Some took the side of the one leaving and even identified with him. So many people have had such negative experiences in choosing to leave a church. Some others took the side of the pastor who experiences hurt and disappointment and sometimes even anger when people leave his or her church. I’ve been on both sides and know the feelings of both.... Read more

Churches and pastors can be pretty possessive. I’ve talked with so many people who’ve been wished ill when they decided to leave a church. Even cursed. I know what it’s like to lose people. And it is almost always difficult. It is also very challenging to not get bitter about it. Especially when it becomes a migration of many. This guy is being verbally blessed on his way out. He has no idea what’s waiting for him on the other... Read more

Being alone is important. Solitude is necessary. Find it. Make it happen. My most fruitful times are outside at night, any time of year. You will not be popular. But you will be more alive than all that opposes you. It’s been done before. You can do... Read more

My daughter Casile refuses to allow me to put clothes on Sophia. “She has to be naked!” she exclaims. Deep down I agree. Even though Sophia has experienced victimization to the extreme, she has made an important decision: she’s not going to see herself as a victim, but as a conqueror. Some people complain that I enjoy criticizing the church and religion for sport. They claim that I am stuck in my victimization, nursing my wounds and swimming in bitterness... Read more

I wrote this poem soon after I left the church all of a sudden two years ago. It pretty much says it all. My hopes are still not realized. Read more

My kids and I have a little game we play. I say, “I love you.” They say, “I love you more.”  Then I say, “I loved you first.” Then they say, “Ah!!!” I always win! I don’t think it was sheer science, fate or necessity that got us here. I think there was an incredible and overwhelming Compassion and even a needful Desire that birthed us into being.
