(This is an oil-pastel on paper (20″x30″) that now resides in Australia, called “Let There Be Day“.) There have been a few moments that I can look back to as cataclysmic events that changed the quality and direction of my life. They are sometimes instantaneous and traumatic. Like a profound crisis. Like the sun rising over the horizon in an enormous blast of heat and light. But sometimes it is gradual… like the rising sun on a misty morning that... Read more

This is a watercolour painting I did that captures the mood I often feel on such nights. Actually, being outside at night, sometimes smoking my pipe, with the full moon and stars and maybe some clouds… these are mystical moments for me. If you’ve been following my drawings at all, and my Sophia series, you might recognize this wall. It is reminiscent of the wall in my drawing, CAUGHT. I love this picture because it symbolizes much of what I do. There is a time to build and a time to tear down. There is a... Read more

I’m discovering that I haven’t had a very healthy image of myself. I’m realizing that I grew up nurturing and being nurtured in a very negative self-view as well as of all humanity together. I fell in love with Reformed Theology in my seminary days. I passionately studied John Calvin, Luther and all the others that followed in their wake. I still have a deep appreciation for Calvin and all that theology. My library is full of books in that... Read more

This is a watercolour painting I did from a photo of myself meditating beside a stream in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York. I was about to be ordained into the ministry. It was a heavy time for me. Notice that the three trees are actually three crosses. Which pretty much describes my 25 plus years of pastoral ministry. I had no idea what I was in for. Or did I? I remember the anguish I went through before... Read more
