The church is killing itself. By two means: It isn’t letting new life in. It is refusing admission to new kinds of people, ideas and ways. Sooner or later it will kill itself by starvation. It is letting life out. Not only is there a major brain drain happening, but a heart drain, soul drain and ultimately life drain. The church is committing suicide. And if you’ve known anyone who’s committed suicide, you know that if they decide to do... Read more

Jesus called his disciples his friends. I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship lately. Perhaps you read my post this morning. It’s my theme today. Since Lisa and I left the church two years ago we’ve experienced times of severe loneliness. We lost a bunch of friends all at once. It wasn’t our intention for it to go that way, but it did. We also lost the culture of fellowship that provided a network of friendships that could be renewed... Read more

Yesterday as I was working on a painting, a song shuffled through on my ipod. It instantly floored me. I’ve been listening to it constantly since. It’s breaking me, and I’m letting it. It was Björk’s, “All is Full of Love”. (Even the video is profound!) Here are the lyrics: You’ll be given love You’ll be taken care of You’ll be given love You have to trust it Maybe not from the sources You have poured yours Maybe not from... Read more

There are two ways to prevail. Like the tree, you can go with the adversity. Bend with it. Be flexible in the face of it. Surrender to it. Or, like the crow, you can lean into it. Streamline yourself against it. Endure it. Stand your ground in spite of it. Both are wise. Both prevail. Even against the most severe of prevailing winds. Buy the original painting. Or buy the a print of this painting. Read more

Just like Sophia here, in one fell swoop I took an axe to the bridge and cut it. Instantly! Although the urge had been building up for a long time, the actual physical cutting of the bridge was rash, instantaneous and permanent. I have no regrets. Buy the original drawing. Buy a print of this drawing. Check out my books that are full of cartoons.  Read more

In my opinion it is a terrible partnership. It won’t last. However, for some reason the marriage prevailed. But there’s something sickeningly symbiotic about this relationship. Buy a print of this cartoon here. Check out my books that are full of cartoons.  Read more

Some would claim that Jesus never changes, that he is the same yesterday, today and forever. But Jesus is not the same to me today as he was 20 years ago. So what’s changed? Or who? From my narrow perspective I would probably say Jesus has changed. But theologically, I would have to say I have changed. In any case, something has changed and even developed. Jesus has grown from my best buddy to something far more cosmic, from something... Read more

I know this comes as a shock to many of you. I call myself a graffiti artist on the walls of the church. But it’s because I believe in it so much and I want to challenge it to be what it is. I’m like any other artist who cares enough about something to continually address it. So here’s why I love the church: it helped me find my own spiritual identity; it provided me with a few life-long friends;... Read more
