I’ll be honest. There were times when I thought the church would improve without a certain person. In fact, it’s only happened a few times, but I’ve had to ask people to leave our online community The Lasting Supper because of bullying or abuse. It’s rare though, thankfully. I’m sure pastors have felt their church improved as soon as I left. Or was removed. Whatever. This isn’t meant to be serious. This is meant to be funny. This is an... Read more

I came across Candi Finch’s post yesterday, Why Should You Care About Katy Perry’s Approach to Religion?. I want to thank her for her contribution to this very important discussion. When I started reading her post I was hopeful because she obviously cares about young people and has done her research. She even says, “Before you dismiss what she (Katy Perry) says…” which I found encouraging because too often the opinions of stars like Katy Perry concerning spirituality are ignored... Read more

I recently wrote a post in response to The Nines catastrophe of having only 4 women out of over 110 speakers. If this was a small local deal they might have gotten away with it. But The Nines is very public. That means higher scrutiny which in turn should inspire higher integrity. Instead it has caused a storm of implicit and explicit no’s to women on one hand and a storm of advocacy for women on the other. I have... Read more

Last night 7 people representing the LGBTQ community from New Direction with Wendy VanderWal Gritter came to my house, and along with some local friends we had over 20 people stuffed into my living room. We had wine and ordered in pizza. They arrived at 5:30pm and I expected them to stay only a few hours but it was almost 11pm by the time they left. It was an amazing evening full of deep discussion, tears and laughter. The love... Read more

Denny Burk asks the simple question, Are Christian Conferences Sexist. He asks this question in response to Jonathan Merritt’s post, Are Christian Conferences Sexist? ‘The Nines’ Controversy Prompts Reflection. Merritt calls The Nines fiasco of having only 4 women speakers out of over 110 speakers “flat out embarrassing” and a “blunder”. Burk’s argument is that ministries who believe that women should not teach men should be left alone. They are simply trying to obey scripture, which Burk supports. His conclusion... Read more

Bob Jones University is in the news concerning its poor handling of sexual assault as well as its week-long chapel sermons on homosexuality. Bob Jones University is the fortress of fundamentalism and the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist churches, a church organization 8 million members strong. Here’s some of what they believe: Men are the head of the home and church. Women are to submit to their husbands and have children. All abortions without exception are murder. Homosexuals are perverts who disobey... Read more
