(Purchase a print of this cartoon, One of You.) Sometimes I feel the need to do a cartoon such as this one to show that I do not hate the church or despise pastors and congregations. I have an inexplicable love for the church, an abiding respect for the pastoral ministry, and an affectionate concern for members of a church. Some mistake my analysis of the church as disdain for it. Some mistake my critique of the pitfalls of pastoral... Read more

I found this story fascinating to watch unfold. On Monday, Rick Warren, the famous pastor of Saddleback Church, posted this image and wrote this with it: “The typical attitude of Saddleback Staff as they start work each day.” Unfortunately, the image is a propaganda poster used by the Mao Zedong regime during the Great Leap Forward, a brutal four-year campaign from 1958-1961 in Chinese history that resulted in the deaths of over 40 million people. So I created this cartoon... Read more

(***You can own a fine art print of this cartoon called “Someone Cares”. Go to my online shop if interested!) One of the greatest compliments I could ever receive as a pastor was when someone would say to me in the midst of their struggle, “We so appreciate you just being here and not trying to fix things or make us feel better.” On the other end of the spectrum, let’s say my daughter is going through a struggle. As... Read more

The church can tweak. Adjust. Shift. Evolve. Grow. Shrink. We can strategize. Use gimmicks. Appeal. But I believe a more fundamental transformation is upon us. It’s not something we are in control of either. I personally believe it is going to look more like a death and resurrection. Which is why the church is resisting what is upon us so vehemently. I mean, who wants to die? MY ART is available! Read more

Apparently loving everybody and having a universal compassion is risky business. People die over it. It seems we have a choice: love some and enjoy a compromised security. Or love everybody and live on the absolute edge. I enjoy communities that experiment with a global kind of love. MY ART Read more

History. Herstory. Those in power write the authorized history books. There are other histories, other stories, if we are willing to read them. I would like to see more written. There’s a challenge I hope you accept! I’ve drawn Sophia’s alternate history, and now I’m starting to write her story to go with the images. This young girl doing her homework already realizes that the history she’s been handed is biased and therefore inaccurate. Her sharp mind is already thinking of... Read more

Who doesn’t like to have fun and laugh once in a while? But, of course, what makes me laugh might not make you. But I got a chuckle out of this idea so I thought I’d share it with you. Did it work? I remember a while ago doing a cartoon called Reverse Rapture that some people got a laugh out of. Last day humor. If I can make some people laugh or at least smile and perhaps cheer up... Read more

This cartoon today was inspired by my friend Kimberly Knight, a woman in ministry who is a lesbian. She wrote an articulate Facebook update yesterday: “I am tired of being petulantly asked by conservative and moderate folks ‘where is the inclusiveness?’ and ‘where is the tolerance?’ when I am standing up for my own inclusion and what I will no longer tolerate is the degradation of my humanity… Those are the straw men of the privileged the when their right... Read more

We believe what we want to believe. We see what we want to see. I remember when I first considered, as a Christian, the value of Buddhism. I read up on it. Studied it. Practiced some of it. At first I conceded that a Christian could incorporate some Buddhism. I could concede that there were good Christ-like Buddhists out there. I could even concede that many of the teachings of the Buddha and Jesus were strikingly similar. Once I lived... Read more

I usually get a few links per week of some preacher or teacher or evangelist of any stripe displaying exactly this kind of pathology. Sometimes entertaining. Always disturbing. Some people will believe anything if it exists, is emphatic, and costs money. Read more
