Okay. I’ve been through a lot in the church. I’ve experienced some pretty traumatically nasty things. Church split. Fired. Resigned. I’ve experienced countless loss of friends, betrayals, and abuse. I’m not whining. I’m just stating some facts because I want to talk about forgiveness. Something I’ve had to do many times. As it has been done for me. It’s interesting when these things come up in conversation, the topic of forgiveness often comes up too. Some super-spiritual people assume that... Read more

For some the connections are easy. For others it is harder to see. Some people just won’t connect the dots. Unfortunately, it’s not just a game. Here’s a question I often ask myself: Do people exclude others because they believe God does, or do some people reject others and shape their god to fit their exclusive attitude? In other words, does our god shape our belief, or does our belief shape our god? Buy fine art prints of my cartoons.... Read more

There really is no rational explanation for this picture. I spent hours on it. The original measures 4″x6″ (10cm x 15cm). It is done with pen and ink and graphite pencil on Strathmore watercolor paper. It’s my submission to this week’s Illustration Friday contest entitled “artificial” (the artificial teddy bear facing the very real grizzly). However, the official title of the work is “fearless”. The image emerged from the depths of my unconscious. She certainly is fearless. Click on the... Read more

Welcome to another FREEBIE FRIDAY giveaway. I’m giving this fine art print away. Click on the image for a larger picture. This is not a photocopy. It is a fine art print of one of my large watercolors that took me a gazillion hours to paint. It measures almost 8″x10.5″ (20cm x 25cm) . It doesn’t come matted or framed. It is signed by me, the artist, dhayward. This is based on a photograph Lisa took of me. At the... Read more

In his excellent essay, “This Is a Religious War“, Andrew Sullivan argues that it must be acknowledged that religion is responsible in some way for the events of 9/11, and that we must try to figure out how and why. He continues: The first mistake is surely to condescend to fundamentalism. We may disagree with it, but it has attracted millions of adherents for centuries, and for a good reason. It elevates and comforts. It provides a sense of meaning... Read more

It amazes me how much fighting goes on inside the church. No it doesn’t. I fully expect it. But it is heartbreaking. The amount of turmoil I experienced over the last 13 years and especially over the last year of my ministry, was enormous. All the enemies made and friends lost… quite an achievement really. My last church seems to be cursed with it. In my opinion it’s because it is valuable real-estate, spiritually and otherwise. But we have made... Read more

I’ve been thinking about empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Without empathy we will never be able to enjoy dialog with one another. I have formulated a test for myself to determine whether or not I am truly empathetic: can I sincerely express that person’s opinion or tell their story in such a way that that person would agree with it? Here are the three scenarios I actually find myself in where this... Read more
