A friend and I went fishing today on the Hammond River, New Brunswick, Canada. Lisa got me a beautiful fly rod for Father’s Day and I finally got to use it. A beautiful piece! Except for a couple of times, we went our separate ways. It was a gorgeous day alone on the river. I always find these times very peaceful and meditative. I caught a couple small ones, like the little speckled trout pictured here in my hand. I... Read more

This poor little fish is being sold a bill of goods. He has no idea that what he’s being offered has nothing to do with his own good, but totally with the good of the evangelist. This little fish just might be a sucker. You can buy a fine art print of this cartoon HERE. Note: I enjoy finding my images all over the place. It’s very cool. So, for your information, I have a policy for the use of... Read more

I watched a good film last night: Creation, the story of Charles Darwin. It isn’t get the best of reviews but I don’t pay much attention to reviews anyway. I was moved by the story and it is a film worth watching. I want to highlight a few of the things that mattered to me. I always appreciate it when some back story is supplied to a significant and important moment in history. It was never simply about a iconoclastic... Read more

Although these aren’t the only two problems, they are at least two! Someone will no doubt bring up The Vagina Monologues. And perhaps someone else will bring up Boob Quake. There are other references. It is interesting to me how heated some discussions get, such as discussions surrounding this issue. I sometimes wonder if that one verse, 1 Timothy 2: 12, wasn’t written: “I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must... Read more

There are some pretty severe theologies of God out there. It seems to me that love, the radically gracious love that we can read about in the bible, trumps all theologies. It seems to me that the kind of love God requires of us is at least the kind of love he would require of himself. We are asked to give up everything for love. God did. Even himself. Note: I enjoy finding my images all over the place. It’s... Read more

True story! I am enjoying my life. Lisa and I haven’t been this lighthearted in a long time. Today is Canada’s birthday, so last night we went to Saint John’s boardwalk for some of the celebrations. We enjoyed a couple of bands, had a drink, ran into many people we know, and laughed together. A great time. I’m enjoying what I’m doing: cartooning every day, painting, writing, blogging, meeting with people to chat. My severance runs out the end of... Read more

I feel like my default is being reset. The last couple of years of my church career was, shall I say, brutal. It was extremely difficult. I’m not blaming the church as much as my own lack of maturity and resilience as a person and as a pastor. But it was, in any case, very challenging, exhausting and disappointing. Toward the end anyway. I recognize now that I was not living very much in joy. I had allowed the increasing... Read more
