This sign says, “Village Petit Paradise” (“Little Paradise Village”). It is a complete hell-hole. Little paradise. No paradise. Quite frequently in our conversations we discussed how insignificant the skirmishes in our churches back home seemed. Not just insignificant. Stupid! I think of all the crap I was going through. Nonsense. The Haitians are barely alive. There are days some don’t eat at all. And disaster approaches with the coming rains. Nobody in Haiti seems worried about how right or wrong... Read more

Yesterday morning I had a breakfast in Haiti of fresh mangoes and coffee. We sat on our duffle bags in the back of a pickup truck as we rode through Port au Prince on our way to the airport. Getting through security was a quagmire of bribes and explaining in my broken French to get to the gate on time. By 8 pm that night I was sitting inside a limousine on my way to my friend’s house for a... Read more

We delivered canvas cots to another tent city this morning. It was scorching hot as we carried the beds up the hill through the mud to place them in a huge tarp building. Naked children wandered in the mud. They would just stop and stare at us. This city seemed better than the other ones we’ve been in. The poverty’s just as severe, but there seems to be a stronger leadership in this one. There is a baker, a school,... Read more

Aural cartoon rooster I snore. So to be kind I’m sleeping in a storage room without air with an open screenless window. I dose myself with bug spray and lie on top of a sheet and lose pounds through the night. The other guys sleep in a large air-conditioned room. I really don’t mind. In fact, I like it. But they don’t hear the rooster that wakes me up every morning around 4:30 or so. I’ve developed a special attachment... Read more

We went to two neighboring tent cities today. They were built as temporary measures until rebuilding was completed. The two cities are separated by a mud road. We left in two pick-up trucks around 9 a.m. and returned at around 4:30 p.m. It poured rain most of the day. Today was the most impacting day for me. These completely deprived people are living in the mud in their tents under a tarp if they have one. Squalor. Deepest squalor. Not... Read more

How can one write about these things? How does one pull himself away from the devastation, recollect his thoughts, and write objectively about what he’s seen today? I was surrounded by extreme poverty, illness, disaster, trauma, homelessness, despair, hunger, thirst… When do I stop the list? This young girl, all by herself on this dangerous street, warily drains water from a tap that is not clean. But that’s all she has. I met pastors who struggle not only with hungry,... Read more
