“There is in my heart a great thirst to recognize totally the nothingness of all that is not God. My praer then is a kind of praise rising up out of the center of Nothing and Silence… If he wills he can make the Nothingness into a total clarity” (Thomas Merton). Read more

I remember going to hear Eugene Peterson speak at a lecture series years ago… on Jonah I think. I remember him saying to “go home and gently take your TV apart with a crowbar!” I agree, and I don’t watch much TV. But tonight our kids were out and my wife Lisa and I were left home alone. What we did was sit on the couch together all night and watch TV… crime and investigation shows, a documentary on Nirvana,... Read more

This is my new idea for my blog. You’ve heard about that postcard project where Frank Warren left blank postcards around with a return address on them, and he invited people to write their deepest secret on it and mail it to him. As a result, he wrote PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, a book full of these anonymous confessions. I want to do something similar on this site. Since it is nakedpastor, a site where I try to... Read more

Right now I’m getting ready to go into my study at the church. I took this pic this morning because the moon is so beautiful in its setting. It is FREAKING cold out! -10 C, 12 F. Bitterly cold! I’m dressed warmly and plan to just study and pray today, and check with this blog once in a while. I have another idea for my blog which I’m going to introduce later today. Stay tuned! Read more

Sunday’s sermon went fine. How do you gauge how it went? There’s a subject to write about! I titled it “Fat Souls”, based on Psalm 63. I talked about the kind of faith that wrote this psalm while in the desert. In the beauty of God’s sanctuary, the peaceful, serene, secure, clear and comfortable sanctuary, David beheld God’s power, his glory, and his love. He had revelations of God’s character in times of worship, seeing clearly that God is almighty... Read more

Wow folks! This one was tough, there were just so many GOOD captions. I got so much feedback with so many different opinions on which one was the best. I didn’t really expect that many responses because I thought most people would be too shy to dare to provide a comic caption in public, but I underestimated your brazenness. Vaary naace! I won’t do this again, but choose a committee or something to decide the final outcome. Seriously, I didn’t... Read more

“Never indulge, at the close of an action, in any self-reflective acts of any kind, whether of self-congratulation or of self-despair. Forget the things that are behind, the moment they are past, leaving them with God” (unknown… found this in my journal from 1990… sounds like Cloud of Unknowing). Read more
