Morning Brew: Friday, Oct 9

Friday

Who will you work justice for this weekend? This weekend you’re going to enjoy the benefits of modern-day life. You’ll finish work and earn far more than the $2 a day that billions of people have to survive on. You’ll drive in your vehicle that cost tens of thousands of dollars and relax in your air conditioned house (which cost much much more). You’re going to relax this weekend, enjoy a hobby, go to a game. None of these things are bad, but they can never become a replacement for our mission on this earth.

In the Old Testament, one of God’s greatest condemnations against the nation of Israel was that she had become complacent over time. She was more concerned with personal gain at the expense of others. Israelites were quick to take advantage of those on the margins. They felt no accountability to work justice.

15 The Lord looked and was displeased

    that there was no justice.

16 He saw that there was no one,

    he was appalled that there was no one to intervene;

so his own arm achieved salvation for him,

    and his own righteousness sustained him. Isaiah 59:15-16

Would God say the same thing about Americans today? Would he say the same thing about me? Would he say the same thing about you? Am I more concerned with leisure and selfish pursuits than defending the case of the fatherless and the widow? Have I allowed comfort and ease dull my senses and pull me away from God’s mission for me on this earth? Have you done the same?

Justice will be done on this earth. God invites us to partner with him to take up the cause of justice. If you’re ready to get involved, here’s a link that can give you some great places to start.
