How long will you be unclean? In Jeremiah 13, the prophet calls out the shameless sexual immorality of the people of Israel. Not only does he condemn it, he lets the people know that God will soon bring punishment upon them.

25 “Because you have forgotten me

    and trusted in false gods.

26 I will pull up your skirts over your face

that your shame may be seen—

27 your adulteries and lustful neighings,

    your shameless prostitution!

I have seen your detestable acts

on the hills and in the fields.

Woe to you, Jerusalem!

How long will you be unclean?” Jeremiah 13:25-27

By pulling up their skirts over their faces, God was threatening to expose their nakedness to the world, that all of their lewdness and shame could be seen. The people of Jerusalem were supposed to be the people of God, and yet their time was consumed with adultery and prostitution. They followed other gods that conveniently employed sexual promiscuity as an act of worship. “Worship” for many of the religions in ancient days included sexual acts, usually with temple prostitutes. The people of Jerusalem were very “religious,” but their piety masked unbridled sexual lust.

How long will you be unclean? Could God say that of us today? How many of us struggle (and fail) with sexual temptation and immorality? How many of us subject our eyes to the false and destructive images of pornography, tainting the purity that God designed for marriage alone? How many Christians are having affairs or are fantasizing about having affairs? How long will you be unclean?

Look at all the Christians caught in the Ashley Madison hack. Like Jeremiah 13, all of our sinfulness, including sexual sinfulness, will one day be exposed to the world. How long will you be unclean?
