Picture Perfect Family

This Sunday at Mt Vernon we’re starting a brand new series, “Picture Perfect Family.” We’re looking at the tension we face when it seems like everyone else’s family is doing well while ours is barely holding together. Facebook is a huge culprit in perpetuating this myth. Why is it always the ideal Facebook statuses that make it on our newsfeed? Why is it that we only read about other families when their son hits another home run, when their daughter gets straight “A’s,” or when their spouse comes home early and cleans the entire house?

I’m not against writing gushy love letters on Facebook and tagging other people so that the world can gaze at your ‘perfect’ family, but it only serves to perpetuate this myth that everyone’s family is perfect, besides yours. Here’s what I would love to see: realistic Facebook posts. I want a parent to be realistic enough to post: “Just yelled at my kids for 20 minutes. Probably should clean the house, but I’m opting for a two hour marathon of Burn Notice in hope that the house cleaning fairy takes care of everything while I’m asleep.”

In reality, families are hurting. Marriages are struggling. A first time guest to our church this past week wrote on her connection card, “We’re trying to make our marriage work.” That’s reality. If you’re a family with issues, this series is for you.
