The Ephesians Challenge

This summer our church is studying the book of Ephesians together (you can catch up on the messages here). But wanting to do more than simply study it, I’ve challenged our church to memorize a chapter of Ephesians this summer. No, I didn’t say a verse, I said a chapter.

Why memorize a chapter of Ephesians?

• Ephesians is a beautiful snapshot of the gospel. Every chapter has incredible truths to learn.
• Your mind will be stretched and challenged as you put an entire chapter in your heart.
• Memorizing a verse or two is good; memorizing an entire chapter is much more valuable.
• It’s a better way to spend your summer months than watching too much reality television.
• If the Word of God is our spiritual sword, then memorizing the Word is a good step to learning how to wield that sword.
• When you plant the seeds of the Word deep in your heart, they will bear fruit for years to come.

This challenge comes out of a personal conviction of mine. Over a decade ago, I heard that a pastor had memorized the entire book of Ephesians and recited it word for word. I couldn’t believe it! I had John 3:16 and a couple of other staple verses memorized, but I didn’t think memorizing an entire book was even humanly possible. So I started memorizing it, just to see if I could do it.

It took well over a year of dedicated work, but I too memorized the book of Ephesians . . . and it changed my life. My comprehension and understanding of the Word grew as I dove deep into it. I truly knew what it meant to meditate on the word day and night. I planted those seeds of truth deep within me, and they have been bearing fruit in my life for the past decade. Since I memorized the book of Ephesians (don’t believe me, here’s me reciting it to my church a few weeks ago), I know you can memorize a chapter. Pick a chapter, they’re all good!
