Creating a Vintage Inspired Laundry Room: One Room Challenge Week 1

I may have just bitten off more than I can chew. I’ve never participated in a One Room Challenge before, but have drooled, envied, studied, and stalked those who have. There is so much happening in my home and life right now, and I reluctantly tiptoed into our office to present this idea to Trent.

Okay, I may have sashayed, nuzzled up and sweet-talked him into making over our laundry room in record time.  Am I crazy to take on a complete room remodel right before the holidays? Yes, but that’s not stopped me before.  So what is this One Room Challenge?

A One Room Challenge is a huge, bi-annual event hosted by Linda from Calling It Home. Oodles of bloggers take part in making over an entire room in only FIVE short weeks. 20 Blogland Rockstars are officially doing the challenge and they share their updates every Wednesday. Then, each Thursday, everyone else is invited to share their progress by linking up as guests.

So let’s dive right in. Here are the before shots of our Laundry Room.

Yowza! Do you feel like you were just time warped back to 30 years ago?

Here’s what I have to work with.  This is our laundry room located right off of our kitchen. As you can see, there is a 1/2 bath attached to this room, but we aren’t going to include that in this challenge.  I do plan on keeping some of my sanity during this project.

This is a shot of the room before we moved in over 2 years ago.  Even though it’s blurry, I had to include this pic so you can fully appreciate the flooring. The walls are the original, builder’s grade cream from 30 years ago. The trim and door is a peachy, oil paint, which means I’ll have to cover it with more oil paint. The cabinets are a dingy dark brown and that utility cabinet/breaker box door never seem to latch.

Our humongo water heater is in the room, blocking the 1/2 bath door from fully opening.  A big issue is that there is no drain pan for the water heater – meaning if there was a leak, it would get all over my hardwood floors!  This takes top priority!

The Laundry Room is connected to our Farmhouse Kitchen, so I decided to use a similar color scheme to allow the rooms to flow together. We have beadboard as our backsplash, and I want to incorporate that somehow into the room. Since my home has a lot of vintage elements, I hope to create that rustic, farmhouse-y feel to the laundry room.

The Plan

• Move the Water Heater.
• Paint the existing cabinets, walls, trim and door.
• Replace the floors.
• Add to existing upper cabinets to increase storage.
• Create a built-in mudroom cabinet and bench.
• Repurpose an old sink base into a folding table.
• Find a way to hide the breaker box and hang a DIY drying rack.
• Replace the lighting with a Pallet Light Box to match the kitchen.
• Add Vintage elements to tie it all together.

I am so excited to see how this room changes over the next few weeks. Enough talking – there’s work to be done! I’m rolling up my sleeves and am off to get the ball rolling! I’ll be back next week with (hopefully) major updates!
