Another exciting week of the One Room Makeover hosted by Linda from Calling it Home and, ooo-wee, progress has definitely been made. Last week, I shared my mood board and plans to makeover our dated laundry room into a Vintage Inspired Laundry & Mudroom. This week was all about the paint.
Ceilings, walls, cabinets inside and out, doors, trim and baseboards! All of it had to be touched and what a week it was! Want a peek of the progress?
Let me show you the before again. This is our starting point.
Yuck! Dark, dated cabinets, yellowed walls, peach trim, awful floors!
Since this week is all about painting, we started with the walls. We wanted continuity between the laundry room and adjoining Farmhouse Kitchen, so we painted the walls the same color.
I love this color! In our Vegas House, the color palette was beige based and I wanted a whiter, brighter color scheme in this home. We opted for Crushed Ice because it has a slight gray tone to it, but still comes off very light and bright.
We painted the walls and interior cabinets Crushed Ice and it turned out beautiful!
I need extra storage in this room, so we added shelves above the eye sore, I mean, breaker box. I plan to put baskets up top to hold scarves, gloves, hats, etc.
There was an odd space between the wall and the cabinets above our washer and dryer, so we decided to add side shelves to finish off the look.
Again, for continuity, we painted the exterior of the cabinets the same color as our lower kitchen cabinets.
Here is our progress so far! It’s so exciting to see things changing!
As I did in my Farmhouse Kitchen, I wanted my cabinets to look like they had been there for years and years, so I deliberately left brush marks in the doors to add to that vintage feel.
We had an old strip light that we removed from our old kitchen cabinets and replaced with updated ones. Since I’m one to not waste anything, I repurposed the light under these cabinets to create a soft glow. Guests have to pass through this room to use the 1/2 bath, so I wanted an option for a warmer, softer light when company is over.
I love this laundry sign I found years ago from Hobby Lobby and had to hang it, even though it’s not officially decorating time! I think it adds a vintage touch.
You can already see the difference a little paint makes. Even if this was all we were to do to the room, it is such an improvement.
So let’s see the to-do list and see what’s next!
The Plan
- Move the Water Heater.
- DONE: Paint the existing cabinets, walls, trim and door.
- Replace the floors.
- DONE: Add to existing upper cabinets to increase storage.
- Create a built-in mudroom cabinet and bench.
- Repurpose an old sink base into a folding table.
- Find a way to hide the breaker box and hang a DIY drying rack.
- Replace the lighting with a Pallet Light Box to match the kitchen.
- Add Vintage elements to tie it all together.
Next week, we have to move that water heater and install the floors. I CANNOT wait for those awful floors to be covered and gone! I’ll be back next week with (hopefully) major updates!
