For many Heathens, this time of year marks the celebration of the Charming of the Plow, a ritual to honor the earth and encourage growth and fertility in the coming seasons.  The concept is very simple: giving offerings to the earth as you begin to stir up the soil for the first time that year.  I wrote a simple song to the tune of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, and my children and I will sing it this year as we give to the earth and prepare our first seeds for planting.

Soil, soil, running deep,
keeping seeds in quiet sleep,
now as you begin to warm,
take our gifts so the seeds are born.
Soil, soil, running deep,
keeping seeds in quiet sleep.
