West Memphis Three Walk Free After 18 Years

West Memphis Three Walk Free After 18 Years August 19, 2011

They were convicted for being young, goth, Wiccan metalheads at the height of the Satanic Panic. Today they walk free.

No evidence. Not a shred. Law enforcement decided the “Satanic kids” committed the crime and refused to entertain evidence that suggested otherwise. Recent DNA evidence exonerated them.

Not that you would know this by the DA running the press conference. He didn’t mention the DNA doesn’t match. He didn’t mention there was no real evidence. He didn’t mention the evidence points to a man who has walked free these 18 years. Reporters had to pry out of him that these innocent men are finally walking free after 18 years.

The State of Arkansas should be ashamed of themselves. Being Wiccan is not a crime. Being a goth doesn’t make you a murderer. A lot of people got caught up in the Satanic Panic. Admitting you were caught up in the hysteria and that you were wrong is valiant. Behaving like the DA did in the press conference is base and cowardly.

All my love and blessings go to Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, Jesse Misskelley Jr and their families. I never thought I would see the day you would go free, and I’m crying tears of joy for you now. May you receive the justice you deserve and compensation for injustice done to you.

Oh my goodness, hearing them speak in the press conference broke my heart. When I find it to post I will share it here. I’m going to go cry for awhile in recognition of this much hoped for, but scarcely imagined day.
