I’ve had Pagan media folks comment on my ability to get folks to tell stories without my actually recording the stories. I’m a bad journalist. I become too interested in the story to grab my audio recorder. That fault was apparent yesterday. One of the elders of my tradition invited me to join her at a Pagan event she was hosting an info table at in Atlanta. It was a lot of fun, but the best part was hearing all... Read more

Having been to Jason Pitzl-Water’s talks I’m quite aware that there are times when you shouldn’t speak to the media. If you don’t have a genuine need, why risk having your words twisted? Even so, I agreed to do an interview that I feel may have been a mistake. I have a great deal of respect and love for Elizabeth Scalia, managing editor of our Catholic portal and famously known as The Anchoress. When she asked me to be on... Read more

Last night there was a live Pagan Centered Podcast recording with Kellee Maize, a female rapper who has a very Pagan-friendly message. We have a natural suspicion of anyone who reaches out to the Pagan community and that, combined with a typo in Kellee’s marketing, meant there some trepidation surrounding the interview. However, Kellee is an impressive lady and very genuine. The interview was excellent and I was especially impressed by her commitment to activism and her love for the... Read more

We all have bad days. No good, horrible days. We give them romantic names like “Dark Night of the Soul.” There’s nothing really romantic about them though. They are about pain, misfortune, grief, loss, stress, powerlessness and despair. Sometimes it’s only a day. Sometimes it’s a season. Sometimes it’s part of our natural emotional cycle. Sometimes a whole constellation of events come together to make the most positive, sane, organized and capable person crack. At one time or another it... Read more

Hacked by vandals shortly before Yule and left for dead, the Glastonbury Holy Thorn unfurled two wee leaves for Ostara. Best news I’ve heard in months. A tiny sprig of green on a tree whose origins could stretch back a couple thousand of years, that was hacked by vandals and feared dead just a few months ago—it’s as though the Green Man himself has sprung from the new grass, laughing. The report came the day after the Sabbat on the... Read more

Pagans Supporting Japan It’s a good time to be Pagan. I’m very proud of our community. Peter Dybing’s fundraising efforts for Doctors Without Borders have raised over $23,000 and this week is the home stretch to reach the $30,000 goal. I wouldn’t have thought it possible that we could have raised so much so quickly. It’s a beacon shining forth of what Pagans, Wiccans, Heathens, Recons and all the other fabulous folks who make up our communities can accomplish together.... Read more

I think the saddest thing about writing for the Pagan community is writing about elders who have passed that I never had the chance to meet. The poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko said “Not people die but worlds die in them.” It’s an appropriate way to express the memories, knowledge and perspective lost every time someone passes from our communities. We should make a greater effort to reach out and honor our elders and record their stories before they become our ancestors.... Read more

One of the religious staples of the Northern Tradition, is the honor and reverence shown for not only our ancestors, but also for our heroes. All too often when reading some of the grand exploits, battles and wars found in the sagas we associate the word hero to that of being a warrior, but while there are indeed many great heroes who are warriors, sometimes heroes are simply those who stay true to their beliefs. It is a historical fact... Read more

I nearly forgot. Nearly let this slip by. Which would be a shame because with Ostara I’ve created song lists for all 8 Wiccan Sabbats. Which is kinda nifty! 13. Ostara by Lisa Thiel 12. Lord of the Dance by Gwydion Pendderwen 11. Spring Strathspey by Taste Like More(?) 10. Prayer to Eostre by WordedRite 9. Eostre by Forefather An epic metal instrumental to get the blood stirring. 8. Eostre’s Dance by River Another yummy instrumental. 7. Blodeuwedd by Damh... Read more
