On our Facebook page we’ve been talking about Harry Potter and religion as the latest movie debuts this Friday. The discussion has been interesting because the Evangelical writers have a totally different perspective on Harry than I do. I don’t see it as a story of compassion, sacrifice and love, although those are certainly elements. I see it as a Greek saga full of honor, integrity, courage, independence and the warrior virtues. I see more of the Nine Noble Virtues... Read more

Patheos’ What Do I Really Believe series wants to know if we hear messages from all that is Divine? What do you think? P. Sufenas Virius Lupus and K.C. Hulsman are among the Pagan responses on the main page but several other Pagans responded to the question. “Highway to Hel” columnist Galina Krasskova writes: Ah, of course the Gods talk to us. I think a better question would be “Do we ever really listen.”?  The Gods never stopped talking to... Read more

Today’s post comes to you from a small, rainy, foggy patch of GA where I sit cocooned in the old green comforter my sister was going to toss out but I rescued because it’s soft and warm. Once again, just when I thought I was feeling better, whatever crud that had infested my body surged back with renewed vigor. Every muscle in my body aches and my brain is operating at low speed. As much as I hate being sick,... Read more

I take news sabbaticals. Sometimes I reach a point where I just don’t need any more bad news. I need a break from gloom and doom. Sometimes just taking a week or two away from the news does the trick. My mind free and clear, I happily dig right back into current events. Lately though I find the major harbingers of doom and gloom aren’t in the media, but just unhappy people. I’ve tangled with depression my whole life, it’s... Read more

After a few weeks away from World of Warcraft I finally got my tech issues fixed and spent all last night downloading the Cataclysm expansion and patches. I was ready and raring this morning to play my “space-goat” death knight and get new gear for my lovably dorky paladin. I didn’t want to think about religion, or Pagans, or eschatology. I wanted to get cool new gear and leveling my mining skills. I wanted to get my game on! Yet... Read more

You may remember that I fell in love this past summer. It was with a lovely family-friendly festival and all the amazing people who have made it happen for the past 30 years. I wrote about my experience at Pagan Spirit Gathering, Jason Pitzl-Waters of The Wild Hunt shared his thoughts on the unique event and the Pagan Centered Podcast processed endless hours of audio interviews from the festival. It’s an amazing event that everyone should experience at least once,... Read more

Within the Northern Tradition there is a deep respect to those who serve in the military. While Veteran’s Day is intended to first and foremost honor those living Veterans from past military service, it is also used to honor those currently serving, and to a lesser degree those soldiers now dead. Some Heathens will be observing rituals to honor the Einherjar: the battle-slain warriors who are taken to Valhalla. Of course, not all of the battle-slain go to Valhalla some... Read more

The following started out as a comment to be made on Star’s Nov. 9th post, “Elitism: The Intellectual Path in Paganism.” Because what I was writing grew and grew into a pretty wide-ranging little article, I thought I’d go ahead and publish it as its own blog post. So, the references to “you” below are to the author of the original post! Enjoy. . . . Interesting thoughts! I must admit that I’m pretty confused, though, since it seems that... Read more

If you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, I’d like you to take a deep breath. Draw in the sense of the sacred. T. Thorn Coyle begins dialogue in this way and I have found it useful. Breath deep. Think about your God. Think about that holy love embracing you. Think of the joy and strength you find in G-d, Jesus or Allah. Bask in that presence. Give thanks for your joy. Give thanks for your blessings. Breathe deep. Pay close attention... Read more

“You dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a ****** education you coulda got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the public library.” – Will, Good Will Hunting “Where is fancy bred? In the heart or in the head?” – Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory There’s been a lot of talk about elitism lately. It’s entered our political rhetoric full-force recently but it’s always been an issue in matters of religion. Intellectualism is seen as an... Read more
