Jesus lets us know that our love for ourselves and our love for others are tied up in each other, and tied up in each other as a divine mandate. It is no mistake; the love—and all it leads us to do—is built on our ability to do both. The mandate is antithetical to individualism. It is a demand for self-compassion and community care.
