The Power of Presence: Learning to be a Good Father December 24, 2023

Being present is the key to being a good Father

Being a good father is a lifelong commitment that goes beyond providing for your family’s needs. It involves being present in their lives, actively engaging with them, and creating lasting memories. In today’s fast-paced world, where distractions abound, the importance of being present in the family cannot be overstated. I am still learning new ways each day on how to be a better father.  The Fatima Family Apostolate was founded by Fr. Robert J. Fox for this purpose.

             Building Strong Relationships

As a father, if you are present this allows you to build strong and meaningful relationship with your children. By actively participating in their lives, we create a sense of trust, love, and security, this is so important. This foundation fosters open communication, understanding, and a deeper connection between you and your children. As Fathers, we must be interested in the activities that take place in the family both physical and spiritual.

             Emotional Support

Children need emotional support from their fathers to navigate the challenges of life. Being present means being available to listen, empathize, and offer guidance when needed. By being emotionally present, we provide a safe space for their children to express their feelings and seek comfort during difficult times. This creates an opportunity for us to share our faith in God.  It allows us as fathers, to lead them in a relationship with Him and to give assurance that we love them, and God loves them also.

             Setting Positive Examples

Children learn by observing their fathers’ actions and behaviors. Being present allows us to set positive examples for our children to follow. Whether it’s demonstrating kindness, respect, or perseverance, fathers who are actively engaged in their children’s lives become role models, shaping their values and character. Also, examples of this are hard work.  Many young adults today lack a good work ethic. This trait is often passed down from the father.

            Creating Lasting Memories

Our time spent together is invaluable, and being present allows us to create lasting memories with our children. Whether it’s playing games, going on adventures, or simply having meaningful conversations, these shared experiences become cherished moments that our children will carry with them throughout their lives.

Promoting Overall Well-being

Overall research shows that children who have involved fathers experience a better overall well-being. They tend to have higher self-esteem, improved academic performance, and better social skills. By being present, fathers contribute to their children’s holistic development, fostering their growth and happiness. Also, most important their spiritual development. A Father in the home must rely on the presence of God and his love for Christ.  As a Catholic father, he must be knowledgeable in the teachings of the Church so that he can pass on the faith to his children.

Being a good father goes beyond fulfilling the traditional roles of provider and protector. It requires being present in the family, actively engaging with your children, and nurturing strong relationships. The power of presence cannot be underestimated, as it lays the foundation for open communication, emotional support, and positive role modeling. By being present, fathers create lasting memories and promote the overall well-being of their children. So, let’s embrace the importance of being present and create a positive impact on our families, one moment at a time.
