International Women's Day was last week sometime. I didn't click on a single article to read about it. I'm sure a good time was had by all, especially all the women who got flowers. That's the smartest and best thing I've heard or seen in a long time.
When I was much younger, hanging about in Mali, I seem to remember that one IWD involved all the women in the village stopping what they were doing to go paint a mural–a thoroughly western, and in my mind, patronizing activity organized by someone (a young peace corps lady not there long enough to discover very much) who could have benefited from grinding more grain by hand and less sitting about under mango trees talking with the men. But also, I was an obnoxious little western twerp back then (not that I'm not that now) and was prepared to judge everybody and everything. It may be that IWD is doing a lot of good for women everywhere. I'd be interested to know how it's celebrated in Saudi Arabia for instance. (That's a joke, don't send me a nasty email.)
So, as per my ongoing series, Men Are Human, they are they are they are, I thought the US could benefit from a National Men's Day. Let's let people from other countries come in and figure out what is wrong with men in America and organize activities to fix their situation and circumstances. Are men too passive (so many of them are). Someone could be organize some simulated exercises to get them to practice taking the lead. Are men too selfish? There could be obstacle courses where they have to give up more and more video games to advance to the next level.
There, I've reached the end of my creativity. I think it would be just as good as anything going on anywhere to improve anything, and if the UN would step up and organize it I'm sure it would be a great benefit to men's lives everywhere.
