Boy have I got a lot to do today. That’s true every day, but on Mondays, our day off, the list always feels like a miniature apocalypse.

Meant last week to put a good word in for Patheos’ Public Square. It’s about children this month, and their capacity to approach the divine. I’m there being a Christian and talking about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, as many of you already saw. In a calm collected moment I’m going to sit down and read all the other entries.

Yesterday was Pentecost, of course, but it was also Solemn Communion Sunday for Good Shepherd. We don’t have a particular age that children receive in our congregation. Anyone who is baptized can come forward. But it is nice to have a concentrated moment to think about this most important Sacrament, that Jesus himself instituted. I enjoy very much getting to know a small group of children, and spend time meditating on the scriptures. Plus Cake.
It’s an intense time, not surprisingly, and usually in the middle I’m given over to despair about my own ability to preach the gospel and engage with anyone, let alone a room full of eight year olds. But by the end I’m always amazed by the power of the Word, to cut through and convict, to heal and to restore. Also, can you believe this cake? If you pay me money I’ll tell you who made it. Beautiful And Delicious.

I can’t go on another moment without mentioning the weather. We had one sunny day last week, and a very chilly weekend, and now it’s gray again, and, not to beat about the bush or put too fine a point on it (insert more cliches here) it’s cold. Struggling not to be bitter. As you know, struggling is the Christian word for failing. So there you are.

Got to rush off. So much to do. Have a lovely day or something.
