#ThursdayThoughts February 7, 2019

It’s not my fault. Matt made me stay up late watching the day old State of the Union which means I missed my proper bed time which means I am waking up super long after my usual waking hour which means this whole day is ruined. That is because I am not the kind of person who can alter even a single aspect of the daily schedule and survive in any meaningful sense. I know this because I just spent seven minutes combing through my archives looking for something well enough expressed to post in order to avoid thinking a ‘new’ or at least ‘partially recycled’ thought, and, besides being so horrified that I will never do it again, I learned that I am always tired and I spend a lot of time complaining about schedule changes. There might be some other stuff in there, but I can’t bear to wade around trying to find it.

So instead of that, how ‘bout some ridiculous and useless advice from ladders.com. I mean, you were probably going to get around to your morning Bible reading, but if you overslept it, as I did, maybe this will do instead. Ready?

You’re not getting what you want, because you’re getting something better.
You’re not getting what you want, because you ignored the whispers.
You’re not getting what you want, because the right thing is coming.
You’re not getting what you want, because it was the only path to learn the lessons you needed to learn.

Don’t you feel better and more intelligent now? On the other hand, we might ask ourselves, Who, exactly, is whispering? Whence cometh the ‘something’ better? How will you know the ‘right’ thing and not unintentionally confuse it with a ‘wrong’ thing? Who is writing the lessons? And finally, really? Oh my word, read a book about something and don’t wander around ladders.com examining your feelings. That’s my pro-tip for the day.

In the spirit of charity, I will now provide you with some better reasons you’re not getting what you want. These are derived from my own deep well of biblical, folksy experience that I have accumulated by being 1. Awesome and 2. Clever. You can trust me at least as much as ladders.com. Don’t check anything I’m saying by any other source. That would be foolish. Just take my word for it. Ready?

You’re not getting what you want because you’re a sinner and you want the wrong things.
You’re not getting what you want because God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your inevitable suffering which you will not in any way enjoy.
You’re not getting what you want because ‘it’s’ not about you.
You’re not getting what you want because you can’t always get what you want. That’s in the Bible right? No wait, that’s a song.
And finally, you’re not getting what you want because the universe is against you and unless you figure out how to, by your awesome mind powers, overcome its perverse unknowable forcefield complexity, you will die alone and in obscurity. No wait, that’s not in the Bible either.

Never mind. I’m gonna stop this and go read a random assortment of theological quotes also taken out of context. And I’m going to drink some more caffeine while contemplating the incredible sweep of Mr. Trump’s hair and how it is that infanticide is totally a thing now. What a fantastic time to be alive. Tinkerty Tonk.
